ITINERARY
TUSCANIA
An Etruscan pearl among villas and Mountains of Tuscia.
Tuscania stands on seven tuff promontories, in a beautiful area just 18km from Viterbo, and the history of the first inhabitants, begins at the end of the Bronze era.
The waterway of Marta River and its tributaries, are the place of attraction of the earliest archaic settlements of the area, on natural elevations formed by water erosion. During this time, it is not possible to speak of a single inhabited center but (as indicated by the discovery of twelve distinct rocky necropolises), most probably of a group of small agricultural villages that had as economic, administrative and religious point of reference San Pietro hill which became, in short time , one of the most important political and religious centers of Tuscia. On the same hill there is Saint Peter’s cathedral built in the XI century. The Lombard Romanesque church is the most important monument of the city, and is particularly well-known for the gorgeous rose window , (and in general for the façade), as well as for the crypt.
Another remarkable monument is certainly the Cathedral, (formerly San Giacomo Cathedral), a simple but impressive structure dating back to 1563. The bell tower, on the left, was built in 178, by the architect Domenico Lucchi from Viterbo.
